What's Going Right in Iraq - The good news is, there is lots of good news
FrontPageMagazine.com ^ | 5/12/04 | Warren Smith

Late last month, Ted Koppel read the names of every American serviceman who was killed in Iraq. The airwaves have before and since been full of speculation as to whether this was an appropriate memorial for the dead, or a publicity stunt for "Nightline," or an anti-war statement.

I do not want to speculate about Koppel’s motives. My personal opinion is that it was not an appropriate memorial for the dead, and it was very much an anti-war or an anti-Bush statement, totally inappropriate for a news organization that purports to be objective.

I do, however, want to observe that if Koppel had undertaken to read the names of innocent people who had been murdered under the regime of Saddam Hussein, he would still be reading names today, weeks later, even if he had the endurance to read them 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Let me also say that while I think we have made plenty of mistakes in Iraq, not least of which is the recent disaster involving the prison photos, it is still clear to me that we are doing a good thing in Iraq. And if Koppel can provide the names of the American servicemen who were killed, let me at least try to provide a very brief list of reasons why they died, reasons why we went there, and why their and our sacrifice is worth it.

*Hundreds of thousands of children who had not received proper medical care now have up-to-date immunizations and other medical care.

* School attendance, by some estimates, is up 80% from levels before the war. Among those being educated are young girls who previously may not have received proper education.

* Despite much publicity early in the war that power plants had been bombed or sabotaged, what hasn’t received wide publicity is that today Iraq now has more electrical power than it did before the war.

*Hundreds of thousands of people have telephones for the first time ever.

* Textbooks that don't mention Saddam are in the schools for the first time in 30 years.

Finally, by the way, Saddam Hussein himself, one of the most murderous despots of the 20th century, is in prison, awaiting trial for genocide and crimes against humanity. And evildoers the world over know that they cannot act with impunity. There is no calculating how many millions of lives, even tens of millions of lives, such a knowledge might save in the years and decades ahead.

My heart breaks for the families who have lost their brothers, fathers, sisters, sons and daughters in this war. But while Ted Koppel is making us aware of the names of the dead, let us also pause for a moment and remember what they have died for.

Good morning, and thanks for the good news, kattracks.

Wish it didn't follow an apology for mistakes...I do not believe any military, or leadership could have done, or could be doing, any better than our awesome military today in this tricky land.

Can you imagine Americans during WWII treating each day's events as if it were a sporting event - forgetting Pearl Harbor and the gas chambers, forgetting that one side in this fight is our bravest loved ones who fight to liberate strangers and save children, and the other side - our ENEMIES - individuals who would mass-murder their neighbors in the name of some sick philosophy - no matter the label - and Americans, led by their corrupt press and pols, judging those who defend their freedom, and pronouncing them guilty on rough days - which in the real world always happen - the days our troops need our support the most.

I will not apologize for the actions of this military, under this leadership in this war.

Anyone can criticize, few could do what these men and women have been called on to do - with such professionalism, courage, and HONOR.

Crazy days.

Last night I was watching CNN (no one fear, Fox was on commercial break). Aaron Brown asked someone , I can't remember the guy, whether the media had been duped by the Administration in reporting only the good news from Iraq and ignoring the negative.

That's exactly what's going on, and I think it is one of the great handicaps we have in fighting this particular war. The media has been treating it like a video game.

Not only that, but they have been assigning the US the role of the bad guys, the team that should be booed. I don't think that ever happened in WWII.

Thanks for all your great posts, btw.

If you go the the archives of the local library, you will find all the publications highly supportive of the war effort. A lot of news was highly filtered back then and the media understood. These days the media can only focus on the negative and how they can control American thought. If a photographer snapped a picture of a German POW with a pair of women's underwear over his head I doubt it would even get a ripple out of the press. Also I doubt a camera would have made it to the compound, as the MP's were more protective back then.

Anther nice thing about '40's publications. They didn't worship at the alter of political correctness.

For these reasons, plus a long list of other initiatives, certain elements of the Arab world will fight to the death,to avoid the spread of any democratic ideals. For one of the richest regions of the world,to allow their people to live in such primative conditions,is a terrible indictment of their philosophy.

This is much like what I just received in my Email this morning.....I can not vouch for the source or content..

Iraq Facts you'll never see in the Bush-bashing news media.

I do wish we could hear more about this type of stuff on our evening news. They only ever report the bad that has happened, and it's good to hear about the positive changes in Iraq too.

Hope you are having a great day!

A front line / insider's view ..

This is a letter from Ray Reynolds, a medic in the Iowa Army National Guard, serving in Iraq:

As I head off to Baghdad for the final weeks of my stay in Iraq, I wanted to say thanks to all of you who did not believe the media. They have done a very poor job of covering everything that has happened. I am sorry that I have not been able to visit all of you during my two week leave back home. And just so you can rest at night knowing something is happening in Iraq that is noteworthy, I thought I would pass this on to you. This is the list of things that has happened in Iraq recently: (Please share it with your friends and compare it to the version that your paper is producing.)

* Over 400,000 kids have up-to-date immunizations.

* School attendance is up 80% from levels before the war.

* Over 1,500 schools have been renovated and rid of the weapons stored there so education can occur.

* The port of Uhm Qasar was renovated so grain can be off-loaded from ships faster.

* The country had its first 2 billion barrel export of oil in August.

* Over 4.5 million people have clean drinking water for the first time ever in Iraq.

* The country now receives 2 times the electrical power it did before the war.

* 100% of the hospitals are open and fully staffed, compared to 35% before the war.

* Elections are taking place in every major city, and city councils are in place.

* Sewer and water lines are installed in every major city.

* Over 60,000 police are patrolling the streets.

* Over 100,000 Iraqi civil defense police are securing the country.

* Over 80,000 Iraqi soldiers are patrolling the streets side by side with US soldiers.

* Over 400,000 people have telephones for the first time ever.

* Students are taught field sanitation and hand washing techniques to prevent the spread of germs.

* An interim constitution has been signed.

* Girls are allowed to attend school.

* Textbooks that don't mention Saddam are in the schools for the first time in 30 years.

Don't believe for one second that these people do not want us there. I have met many, many people from Iraq that want us there, and in a bad way. They say they will never see the freedoms we talk about but they hope their children will. We are doing a good job in Iraq and I challenge anyone, anywhere to dispute me on these facts. So If you happen to run into John Kerry, be sure to give him my email address and send him to Denison, Iowa. This soldier will set him straight. If you are like me and very disgusted with how this period of rebuilding has been portrayed, email this to a friend and let them know there are good things happening.

I wrote Mrs. Hackworth two hundred well-chosen words but she hadn't the cajones to respond.

I called McCain's DC office and hung up on his "military" staffer droning on how we "have to show the prison photos".

Kerry prefers the UN and France--and chooses McCain as his SecDef--

A couple of Manchurian Candidates attempting a coup--

No thanks, we'll keep our President who respects and appreciates our fine people in uniform.

After Nic Berg, you're either for Zarqawi or for America.
